right i'm entering a talent contest that could decide my future and i n want 
to sing this song but i cant find the backing track so does anyone no anything like a site  
for free downloads that i could use

you can not take any one intrument out of a stereo recording.  
 
get a karaoke CD. there are lots of 'em for sale all over the web...... google it.

there is a technique which sometimes works and sometimes doesnt work.  
You can remove the vocals ONLY if they are panned dead in the center of the mix and they dont have too much reverb,  
however with this method you also lose anything else dead center (snare? bass drum maybe?) 
anyway, its usually worth a shot. 
you can reverse the phase of only one of the stereo channells so that the things that appear evenly in both channells are eliminated. 
 
hope this helps, as vocals are usually panned centrally. this can be achieved in cubase using the stereo flip tool and choosing remove as the sub option.

ALSO LOOK ON LIMEWIRE THEY HAVE A LOT OF INSTRUMENTALS..
