Most of my experience is in recording acoustic guitars, instruments and vocals. I'm not a bass player and don't have much experience with recording it. So when I need to occassionally I find the bass line tends to sound much thinner than it sounded while being played.

Any suggestions?

Should I record direct? Through a preamp? By miking an amp? Compressor?

Thank you

typically play my bass direct into the Hi-z input of the MOTU 828mkII. I was thinking I need a good bass preamp or direct box, maybe ??

Thanks

My prefered method for recording electric bass is to take a DI track and mic and amp and mix the 2 together. Try flipping one of the channels out of phase to see if it helps the sound. I also like to compress bass quite a bit with a good compressor but be careful about setting the attack times to quick. It can kill the punch of the bass
